THE AUTHOR
Comer Taylor, a proud Floridian and Baby Boomer, is a first-generation college graduate. He was born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, but at the age of three, his parents moved to West Palm Beach, Florida and there raised he and his four siblings. As a youth, he enjoyed adventures as a Boy Scout, especially when he earned merit badges and the activities during weekend camping. He is delighted to be a product of the public school system, and he credits most of his teachers for preparing him not only for college, but for life. In high school, he enjoyed playing football. He was a two-year starter, earning player of the week, and becoming captain of the team during his senior year. He earned two football scholarships with offers from Albany State University and Alabama A & M University (AAMU). Instead, he bypassed football, choosing to focus solely on his academic pursuits and as a result, he was able to complete his bachelor's degree requirements in three years and marry his high school sweetheart, Crystal. Over the next three years, he earned a master's degree in urban studies from AAMU and a second master's degree in urban and regional planning from The University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Comer was employed by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) for 12 years as an Urban and Regional Planner and later as a Project Manager. During his tenure at TVA, he was loaned to the newly established and Memphis based Tennessee Valley Center for Minority Economic Development (TVC) to aid them with creating jobs and business opportunities for Minorities throughout a seven-state region. After completing his commitment to TVC, Comer used his entrepreneurial skills to begin a Memphis- based retail establishment that offered beauty products to professionals, and the general public serving portions of three states, including northern Mississippi and western Arkansas. Since he and his wife are both Floridians they decided to return to their home state to be near their parents, siblings, friends and classmates. At that time, Comer transitioned to real estate and worked 30-years as a successful broker-salesman and real estate broker. As a realtor, he served on the Board of Directors for the Orlando Regional Realtor Association and the Florida Association of Realtors. During his first year in real estate, he earned "Rookie of The Year," followed by the President's Award and in 2002, Taylor received the "Pillar of The Community Award" for his volunteer work in the Orlando community. With a deep commitment to community service and mentorship, Comer spent 14 years as a mentor in the Orange County Public Schools system and the local Orange County Correctional Facility. For more than 25 years he and his wife have supported community-based organizations like the Coalition for the Homeless, Orlando Union Rescue Mission, The Salvation Army and others. He is a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, a devoted husband, and father to two daughters. His family of four graduated from different HBCUs and their collective love for HBCUs inspired his book, HBCU Greatness: The Journey Continues.
